The Open Framework theme is now in maintenance mode

Posted on June 2, 2017
by Joseph G Knox

Since its inception in 2012, The Open Framework Drupal theme has helped power a large number of websites, both internal and external to Stanford. We are all very proud of the work that has gone into the project, and look forward to continuing to watch the growth of website's using the theme.

Now nearly five years into its life, we have decided to place the Open Framework theme in maintenance mode and will no longer be making any enhancements. There are no plans to create a Drupal 8 version of Open Framework.

Version 7.x-2.04 Release of Open Framework

Posted on April 8, 2013
by Megan Erin Miller

We have tagged our first official stable release of Open Framework (7.x-2.04), which will be rolled out to Stanford Sites and the Collaboration Tools Installer on April 9th, 2013.

What's changed since February 4th:

  • Resolved jQuery conflict
  • Resolved menu drop-down behavior issue (where it was applying to all menus)
  • Upgraded to Bootstrap 2.3.1
  • Created Admin Shortcuts region for logged in users
  • CSS/template optimization
  • Added defaults for theme settings
  • IE testing and fixes
  • Responsive block behavior and style adjustments
  • Updated search box styles
  • Added print styles
  • Accessibility review and fixes
  • New logo/screenshot
  • Revised subtheme kit

And more. See the full commit history online.

Our upcoming release cycle:

  • We are now working on a quarterly release cycle for Open Framework and the family of Stanford-branded subthemes built on OFW.
  • Our next release to the Stanford community will be sometime mid-late June.
  • In the meantime, will be incorporating patches, doing updates to the theme based on the issue queue for Version 2 milestone on Github.

We hope in the coming month(s) to work on releasing Open Framework as a project on Drupal.org. The main thing we need to figure out in order to do this is remove the licensing conflict from including Twitter Bootstrap. We may instead have to not bundle Twitter Bootstrap with the theme, and have uses download it elsewhere.

We continue to welcome your feedback, contributions, patches, and support on Github.

Theme Update February 4. 2013

Posted on February 4, 2013
by Megan Erin Miller

We have tagged a new release of Open Framework, which is available from the downloads page.

Here's what's changed, and where we are heading from here:

What's changed in Open Framework since December 21, 2012:

  • Added default drop-down and nested menu behaviors to top navigation and sidebar menus:
    • For top nav: Drop-down menus are on click, not hover. Use "show as expanded" checkbox on menu link settings to enable menu flyout behavior.
    • For sidebar menus: Force menu to show sublinks by checking the "show as expanded" checkbox on the menu link settings. By default, nested links are shown when you are in that section of the site.
  • Added Font Awesome icon font
  • Moved secondary menu links to new region at top of page as additional "help" links area. This only appears when you are logged in.

What's coming up for Open Framework in February/March:

  • Remove jQuery reference in .info file
    • You will need to use the jQuery Update module (7.x-2.x-dev) in order to support the responsive menu drawer behavior in Open Framework and other jQuery-dependent Bootstrap behaviors.
  • Patch under review to move style includes from .info file to the theme settings options
    • This will allow users to enable or disable styles through the theme settings UI instead of having to override the .info in their subtheme
  • IE testing
  • Optimization
  • Full conversion to HTML5

What's coming up for Stanford Framework in February/March:

  • Fix for SUNet login link positioning [DONE]
  • Fix for retina display of Stanford logos
  • Print styles
  • Image spriting
  • IE testing
  • Accessibility review

Posted on December 21, 2012
by Megan Erin Miller
We have tagged a new release of Open Framework, which is available from the downloads page.

Here's what's changed, and where we are heading from here:

What's changed in Open Framework since November 30th:

  • Added a subtheme kit to Open Framework to make it easier to create subthemes
  • New baked-in responsive support (using Bootstrap classes and js) for main menus using template.php instead of jQuery
  • Regions updated to all use row-fluid instead of row
  • New screenshot for theme in appearance admin page
  • Updated Boostrap to version 2.2.2
  • Added btn style to search forms
  • Added Bootstrap behavior and styles to alert messages (now you can click to close!)
  • Changed search box from embedded in theme to using default search form block and search box region (now you have to place this block in the search box region to enable)

What's coming up for Open Framework in January:

  • BUG FIX: need to remove Bootstrap dropdown menu behavior from menu blocks (other than main menu)
  • Complete style guide documentation (depends on whether we can get support for custom libraries on Sites.stanford.edu so that we can use Geshi filter to show code examples)
  • Add documentation for how to use regions and blocks (best practices for site building)
  • Demos for Stanford community and vendors
  • Investigate jQuery implementation, either using jQuery Update module or ...?

Also, an update on what's new in Stanford Framework:

  • New theme options to support the following:
    • Stanford Identity Guidelines site title treatments for schools, departments, and admin units (includes options for first line and second line of site title, as well as style and placement)
    • Show/hide logo on mobile
  • New styles to support:
    • Main menu with drop-downs
    • Responsive main menu behavior
    • Default block menu styles
  • Revised Stanford brand bars including new identity marks, fonts, colors, and background gradient specifications
